Quitter’s Day: Turning Resolutions Into Lasting Results

I’m a quitter and a loser for sure! I have tried (and quit) many weight loss programs before finding SkinnyBox™ to finally lose 100 pounds. With each of those past programs, the only thing that I lost was a little bit of faith in myself and any hope that I would ever be able to live the quality of life that I am living now.

Don’t misunderstand me, I’m a big believer in giving something a fair chance but also, in moving on to find what works! I’ve never understood “beating my head against a brick wall” by continuing to do something that is clearly not working.

The Cycle of Quitting: Why Resolutions Fail

Every January I would set a weight loss goal and pick a new diet or program to follow. Excitedly I’d begin this new regimen with maximum effort. I would meal plan, count calories, drink supplements, start walking, and do all of the other things that attempted to give me an entirely different life immediately. I say that through a laugh just thinking about it. Why? Because within the first month I was done! If I had not seen a measurable difference for all of the effort that I was giving, then I was out. The problem with that is two-fold: I didn’t know what differences to “measure” and I never anticipated how long I was going to have to give that “effort.”

What Is Quitter’s Friday?

What I’ve since discovered is that this cycle was not unique to me. This happens to so many people. As a matter of fact, it happens so much that there is a day designated to mark the occurrence. Yep, there is a Quitter’s Day and guess what? It is in January. So, if you’ve made a New Year’s Resolution, you may want to pay attention right here.

Quitter’s Friday, a term coined by behavioral experts, refers to the second Friday in January when the majority of people abandon their New Year’s resolutions. Studies reveal that by mid-to-late January, nearly 80% of resolution-makers have already given up on their goals. For many, this marks a turning point where initial enthusiasm wanes, leaving them feeling defeated and unmotivated.

The Psychology Behind Quitter’s Friday

Understanding why so many people give up so soon can help us break the cycle. Here are the key reasons:

  • Overwhelming Ambitions: Many resolutions, particularly those related to weight loss, are overly ambitious. Goals like “losing 30 pounds in a month” or “exercising every single day” are often unrealistic and unsustainable.
  • Lack of Immediate Results: In our instant-gratification society, people expect quick results. When progress is slower than expected, frustration builds, leading to feelings of failure.
  • Burnout: A drastic change in habits without proper preparation or gradual adjustments can result in mental and physical fatigue. This makes it easier to revert to old patterns.
  • No Support System: Going it alone can be daunting. Without encouragement or accountability, sticking to resolutions can feel like an uphill battle.
  • Winter Blues: January’s cold weather and limited daylight can contribute to low energy and mood, making it harder to stay motivated.

The Impact of Quitter’s Friday

This phenomenon isn’t just about giving up a goal; it can lead to a cycle of guilt and self-doubt. Many people view abandoning resolutions as a personal failure, which can discourage them from setting future goals altogether. Even if they do find the strength to try again, it usually only ends up reinforcing this never ending cycle.

Breaking Free: How I Lost 100 Pounds with SkinnyBox™

January of 2021 was like every other new year for me, except that I was even more battle weary due to the stress of the previous year. I started the new year with weight loss goals (and by “goals”, I mean “wishes”) that felt unbelievably overwhelming. That’s why by the summer, I was beginning another weight loss journey, yet again.

During the first week into my SkinnyBox™ program I experienced a major win…eleven pounds lost in seven days! Since much of this was attributed to water weight and inflammation, I experienced an instant physical response—pain in my body was lessening at a considerable rate. I had never been more motivated to continue on a program.

After that, it was twenty pounds the first month. Okay, now I was completely in it to win it! All of the joint pain and stiffness was gone and I was feeling relief that I had not experienced even with medication.

Then it was one hundred pounds in ten months. I stood on my bathroom scale and cried. I had finally broken the quitting cycle and experienced a weight loss transformation that I knew could be had—right along with thousands of others who have experienced great success with SkinnyBox™ since then.
